Feedback Strategies
Feedback as I alluded to last week is complicated. This is why there are professions just in this category, aka editors etc.. After the brief introduction to "feedforward" I decided I wanted to learn a little more one the topic. I believe that this is good way to go about feedback and the principle is a nice one to use, however it cannot be used in all cases. For instance, when instructing a class and an assignment is handed in, unless the student is unable to resubmit the assignment the feedforward approach gives him or her no help on the current assignment. Most often also the next assignment will be different and use a different way of thinking about a set material. That being said, for this class it works great. This is a creative class, so one's style or opinion should be put down because it is different than their owns. Instead just give encouragement and "tips" on how they may want to take a story next time. In the "Try Feedforward Instead of Feedback" article something that really stuck out to me is when the author wrote that it is easier to help someone to learn what is right than to tell them they are wrong. For anyone it is hard to hear you are wrong in any accord. So this, to me, is a great time saver as well as a tool to ensure that the person you are giving feedback to doesn't just brush you off for being harsh on them. The next feedback source I took a look at was the growth mindset blog "How to Craft Constructive Feedback". The most important information I took from the image posted was "to me a mirror". In other words, how would you feel if you were reading the feedback post and this was your work. This is so important. To many times we can get in a rush and forget how things may come across to someone else. One tip I like to use when giving feedback came from one of my early biology ta's. She said write feedback like a sandwich. First start with something that was really good that the person did and praise them on that. Next insert something, in a positive manner, that they may should take a look at or work on. Finally end the feedback with another praise related theme. I find this to be pretty beneficial in getting good comments across as well as keeping a good working atmosphere with your peers.
